Privacy & Safeguarding

How we keep girls safe and their information private.

This page explains how Girls Thrive Network protects the girls and young women we work with, and what we do with the information people share with us.

Our safeguarding promise

The safety and dignity of every girl comes first. This promise applies to our staff, volunteers, campus champions and partners.

  • We have a named safeguarding lead who approves anything we publish about a girl and handles every concern.
  • Staff and volunteers contact girls only through Girls Thrive Network channels, never through personal accounts.
  • No girl's support ever depends on her agreeing to a photo, a story or a public post.
  • Volunteers who work directly with girls receive safeguarding guidance before they start.

Photos and stories

  • Girls under 18: we do not publish photos where they can be recognised, and we do not share stories that could identify them.
  • Young women 18 and over: we publish a photo or story only with their written consent, and they can ask us to remove it at any time.
  • We never publish surnames, phone numbers, addresses, school names, or sensitive details such as pregnancy, marriage or health.

Thrive Hub

  • Requests show only a first name, course or level, the need and the cost.
  • Backers never contact students directly. All messages go through Girls Thrive Network.
  • We pay schools, bookshops and suppliers directly, never the student.
  • Students under 18 can be supported, but their requests are posted anonymously and without a photo.

Reporting a concern

If you are worried about a girl's safety, or about the behaviour of anyone connected to Girls Thrive Network, contact our safeguarding lead at hello@girlsthrivenetwork.org with "Safeguarding concern" in the subject line. [CONFIRM: a dedicated safeguarding email or phone number.] We take every report seriously and respond as quickly as we can. If someone is in immediate danger, contact the police or emergency services first.

What information we collect

  • Website forms: your name, email, optional phone number and message when you volunteer, partner, pledge a gift or sign up for updates.
  • Thrive Hub students: your name and contact details, your student ID or admission letter, and documents about your request, such as a fee invoice or book list.
  • Backers: your name, email and the amount you gave.

How we use and protect it

  • We use your information only to run our programmes, check requests, process gifts and keep you updated.
  • Student documents are kept in a private folder that only the people checking requests can open.
  • We share information only where needed to do this work, for example confirming a fee with a school or processing a payment. We never sell it.
  • We keep student documents only as long as we need them. [CONFIRM: how long, for example 12 months after a request closes.]

Your rights

Under Nigeria's Data Protection Act 2023, you can ask to see the information we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or withdraw your consent. For anyone under 18, we ask for a parent's or guardian's consent before collecting personal information. To make a request, email hello@girlsthrivenetwork.org.
